Kanha is better known as Kipling's country because it was in these jungles that Rudyard Kipling was inspired to write his famous 'Jungle Book'. His imagination was ignited by the dramatic beauty of the forest and the tremendous variety of wildlife, which exists even today, safe within the boundaries of the Kanha National Park.
Situated in Madhya Pradesh, officially declared the Tiger State as it houses the highest concentration of tigers in India, Kanha lies in the eastern part of the Central Indian highlands. The Kanha National Park stretches over an area of 940 sq.kms, and is sometimes referred to as the "N' Gorongoro of India" because of the large diversity of wildlife that exists here. But, Kanha differs from the Tanzanian Park because it is greener and the hills are more wooded. This magnificent park is home to 22 species of large mammals and over 200 types of birds.

Commonly spotted animals include the spotted deer, sambar, barking deer and the chousingha, the world's only four-horned antelope. One can also see the sloth bear, locally called 'Bhaloo' as well as thickly muscled gaur or Indian bison. Other denizens of this park include the wild boar, the wild clpg and the jackal. The barasingha or swamp deer, is referred to as the "Jewel of Kanha" and is making a remarkable comeback after being on the brink of extinction. The 12 horned barasingha is only found here and it is the biggest conservation success story because from a population of 66 in 1970, there are now more than 500 barasinghas in Kanha.
Most visitors come to Kanha to see the big cats, the leopard and of course the tiger. The forest department employs trackers and uses trained elephants to increase the chance of a sighting. Petrol engine and four-wheel-drive diesel vehicles manufactured after 1997 are allowed inside the park, but all vehicles have to be accompanied by a forest guide. The forest department also arranges tiger shows from elephant back and these are quite popular.
There are two entrances to this wild world. The more frequented Kisli entrance is on the southwestern end of the park and the Mukki entrance is on the western edge. Most of the lodges and resorts are on the Kisli side, but a few nice places can also be found in Mukki. Amongst the nice places to stay on the Kisli side is the Wild Chalet Resort, .which is run by the Indian Adventures Group. Madhya Pradesh Tourism's more affordable Baghira Log Huts is located inside the park gate at Kisli, and is quite comfortable and more affordable.

If you are staying on the Kisli side you must visit the Interpretation Centre' established by the forest department at the entry gate. This centre helps tourist understand the nuances of the sights and sounds of the forest. They have a unique display panel with several buttons dedicated to the different calls of the animals in the wild. For example, one can push the button for the cheetal (spotted deer) call and hear exactly what sound this deer makes when it senses a predator on the prowl. This display is extremely informative and enhances the wildlife experience for any visitor.
